Lucas Oil Golf Course offers 18 holes of challenging golf.  With a par of 72, the layout blends seamlessly with unspoiled surroundings that have been described as the hidden gem of the Hoosier state.  The course, owned by Charlotte and Forrest Lucas, Founders of Lucas Oil Products, was designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan and features multiple tee boxes on each hole that allows the course to play from 5000 yards to just shy of 7000 yards.

Sycamore Springs Park is a beautiful, relaxing, family friendly campground. Enjoy nature and take in the sights located on the property such as Deer Lake, the High Bridge Trail, Little Blue River, numerous unique hiking trails and 20 playgrounds for all ages.  Come make memories while exploring unique scenery with family and friends at Sycamore Springs.

Other opportunities for hiking and exploring unspoiled wilderness exist throughout the English environs. Hemlock Cliffs, a part of the Hoosier National Forest, is a box canyon of special beauty in southern Indiana.  A one-mile hiking trail leads you down into the canyon under a lush canopy of large trees and past high seasonal waterfalls. Yellow Birch Ravine Nature Preserve, located just west of English, is a 441-acre nature preserve that contains many deep valleys and steep rocky cliffs.  Hemlock trees and even a small cliff side patch of mountain laurels can be found on the slopes in this area. While in English, we encourage you to get to know the locals and hear about the town’s unique history.  From its founding as Hartford in 1839 to its current name of English, the town hosted U.S. Representative and 1880 Vice Presidential candidate William H. English, a linotype school, various major league baseball players, and a sitting U.S. President.  It also suffered and survived several historic floods, which forced the town to be relocated to higher ground by FEMA in the 1990s.

With the relocation of English, a significant open tract of real estate became available in the flood zone. Representing the spirit of the townspeople, two local citizens, one in his early 20s, came up with the idea of turning some portions of this open tract into a high-quality golf course and made it a reality with investment from many of the local citizens.

Looking to the future, members of the community are working on the creation of a multi-use trail that would connect Sycamore Springs Park, Historic English, Lucas Oil Golf Course and the business district of English.  In addition, the community hopes to restore a mill from the late 1800’s located in Historic English, that would serve as a hub for renewed economic opportunity.
